Natural gas is colorless, odorless, and non-toxic. As a safety precaution, an artificial odor, is added to help detect even the smallest escape of natural gas. If you smell a strong, persistent gas odor, immediately follow these safety precautions.

Open all doors and windows if you can do so quickly and easily. Because natural gas is lighter than air, it rises and will dissipate rapidly where it can escape into the open air.
